Arnica montana has been used in Europe for centuries to treat swelling, soreness and bruising. This product is often misunderstood when confused with ingesting the arnica plant in its raw form. When properly prepared, Arnica may significantly decrease the healing time or the appearance of such. There are many formulations from different companies. Sublingual (under the tongue) types are the most often recommended for plastic surgery.
Arnica (Arnica montana)
Arnica is also commonly called leopard's bane. The arnica plant has a bright yellow, daisy-like flower that blooms around July. Preparations made from the flowering heads have been used in homeopathic medicine for hundreds of years. It is popular in Germany and over 100 drug preparations are made from the plant. Arnica is a perennial that is protected in parts of Europe.
The active components in arnica are sesquiterpene lactones, which are known to reduce inflammation and decrease pain. Other active principals are thymol (an essential oil), flavonoids, inulin, carotenoids and tannins.
Arnica works by stimulating the activity of white blood cells that perform much of the digestion of congested blood, and by dispersing trapped, disorganized fluids from bumped and bruised tissue, joints and muscles.
Arnica is known to stimulate blood circulation and can raise blood pressure, especially in the coronary arteries. The plant is used externally for arthritis, burns, ulcers, eczema and acne. It has anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory qualities that can reduce pain and swelling, improving wound healing.
Arnica is used topically for a wide range of conditions including bruises, sprains, muscle aches, wound healing, acne, superficial phlebitis, rheumatic pain, inflammation from insect bites, and swelling due to fractures.
An experienced clinician may recommend arnica as an herbal remedy for senile heart, angina, or coronary artery disease.
Homeopathic preparations are also used to treat sore muscles, bruises, and other conditions associated with overexertion or trauma. Homeopathic doses are very diluted and generally considered safe for internal use when taken in accordance with the directions on the product labeling.
Arnica is perhaps best known as a homeopathic remedy for muscle strain and soreness. Arnica, also known as leopard's bane, mountain tobacco, mountain daisy and wolf's bane, is made from the dried flowers and sometimes roots of a few members of the daisy (Asteraceae/Compositae) family. These members include Arnica montana L., the major source of arnica in Europe, Arnica chamissonis ssp foliosa, Arnica fulgens Pursh, arnica soraria Greene, Arnica cordifolia Hook and Arnica latifolia Bong. The dried flowers of another member of the daisy family, Heterotheca inuloides, also called arnica, are used in Mexico as a folk remedy.
Arnica is available in homeopathic preparations, in herbal tinctures and in topical products. Externally applied tinctures of arnica are commonly used in countries such as Germany to treat contusions, sprains, hematomas, rheumatic disorders and superficial inflammations of the skin.
