my whole PE thought-process is: what exercises/routines/devices am I willing/able to stay committed long enough and hard enough to see results. If it starts to be a detriment to my job/life/etc. then I wouldn't be able to put the necessary effort for the hoped-for outcome. For some reason the BM made sense and I saw growth very quickly which made me want to commit more energy. Knowing myself as well as I do, my approach had to be two-fold: what lengths am I willing to go for this and do I have the time necessary to achieve. So far, 14 months or so, I'm very pleased and wanting/willing to continue.
I realize the 'no pain/no gain' and 'feel the burn' axioms are most prevalent, and trust me I can definitely feel the burn/pain, so this isn't without 'effort'...it's just coming at it from a different angle that I know I can sustain.
